November 2009

Welcome to the fall!

We had a surprisingly wonderful rain in October. 4.5 Inches to be exact and the cattle have been very happy about it. To make matters better we had the rain and then a few days of very warm weather so as many locals have been saying, “you could basically just sit and watch the grass grow.”

Cattle are looking well. Some have started calving, so in the next few months the ranch will be full of new calves on the ground. My favorite time of year and with this new grass the mother cows are going to be very happy.

Farmers Markets are going well. Saturday ends up being a very busy market! Such a fun market because it really does become such a social event. Great to visit with everyone and hear how their week went.

Steers are fat and ready to harvest just in time for the holiday season. We are still using the MHU, Mobile Harvest Unit. It is the first Unit in California. It travels from ranch to ranch and harvests animals on site so that the animals never have to travel. This makes it possible for all our animals to be born, raised and harvested on our ranch. Better for the rancher, better for the environment and most important, better for the animal since “stress” is something they know nothing about.

We also hope to be shipping in the next month! So keep us in mind for a perfect holiday gift! Another idea, and what I did for my friend was a “Farmers Market Gift Basket”. I filled a beautiful basket full of fresh vegetables, french bread, fruit, a local wine and some Rancho San Julian steaks on top. A very usable gift and great for everyone!

On a personal note, I got married in September to Austin Campbell, who I have been together with for the last few years. We had a large, fun filled wedding. All the food was grown here at the ranch. We used all our own beef, veggies from the garden and we grew all our own flowers. It was a great event, thanks to all who helped!

Hope you are all enjoying the beginning of fall!

Thanks,
